Required Coverages For Operating In Ohio

The type of coverages you'll need depend on the cargo, operating radius, and whether you are local or out-of-state. It is required in the state of Ohio to have commercial auto liability insurance as the primary coverage. Additionally, you will want physical damage, cargo insurance, and uninsured/underinsured (UM/UIM) coverage. More often than not, the shipper, motor carriers, freight brokers, and others involved in your operation will require you to have a specific limit to haul shipments.

Commercial/Primary Auto Liability: Protection for accidents to bodily injury and property damage.

Physical Damage: Helps protect your commercial vehicle in the event that it is damaged. It can help pay for repairs or replacement costs if your truck is involved in an accident. It can also help cover costs related to damages caused by theft, vandalism, or natural disasters.

General Liability: If a person gets hurt around your truck, the delivery of products is damaged, or the driver accidentally causes a slip around the premises. This is highly recommended and in most cases required to operate.

Trailer Interchange: Coverage of physical damage to the trailer being pulled. This is for non-owned trailers' and protects the trailer in the event of a collision, theft, fire, vandalism, and explosion.

Non-Trucking Liability: Helps protect you if you are driving your truck 'off the clock" or for personal reasons. Similarly, this is known as bobtail insurance, while the two are different, this may be required by the motor carrier.

Limits & Areas We Cover

Ohio's minimum personal auto liability limits:

Bodily Injury: $25,000

Property Damage: $25,000

This is not the required limit from the FMCSA. The FMCSA requirements for general freight carriers is $750,000 as a minimum limit. This will usually not suffice for the shippers and others involved in transportation, the recommended minimum liability limit is $1,000,000 and $100,000 in cargo insurance.

Additionally, we recommend obtaining uninsured motorist coverage as part of your policy. This can save you excess liability costs in the event of an accident or claim with an uninsured or underinsured. According to the III (Insurance Information Institute) it is estimated that nearly 13% of drivers in Ohio are uninsured, which means that over 1/10 drivers are driving without insurance. Having UM/UIM coverage on your policy can save you financially and protect your assets in the event of an accident.
